How To Get A Ged In Michigan

Michigan uses two options for high school equivalency testing, the GED and HiSET exams. The GED® (General Education Development) exam contains four subject tests in the areas of Language Arts), Science, Mathematical Reasoning, and Social Studies.

The HiSET® (short for High School Equivalency Test) has separate Language Reading and Language Writing subtests, so five in total.

The GED and HiSET exams are for adults who never completed their high school education and give them the opportunity to secure a credential that is accepted by practically all North American colleges and universities and employers in the same way as a regular high school diploma.

Michigan GED testing requirements

You cannot already possess a high school or equivalent diploma.
You cannot be signed up for another school program.
You must be at least 16 years old.
16/17 year-olds only qualify if they meet strict criteria. They must, for example, hold permission from their school boards and have parental consent.
There is no requirement to first take the GED Ready® practice test or another practice test.
Michigan has no residency requirement.

Michigan GED online

Both the GED and HiSET exams are available at test centers and online. To qualify for taking the GED exam online, you need to attain scores in the "Likely To Pass" (or green) zone of the official GED Ready test. There's one GED Ready test for each GED subtest (so four in total) that are available on the official GED website (GED.com) for $6 each.

If you take the GED exam at an official Michigan GED testing site, you are not required to first take and pass the GED Ready practice test. This only applies when you take the exam online. For taking the HiSET-At-Home online test, a similar system applies.

In Michigan, each of the four GED subtests costs $37.50 (so $150 for the entire GED battery) if you take the GED exam at a test center.

If you take the GED exam in an online format, each of the four sub-exams will set you back $43,50 so your total testing cost will be $174. You should, however, add the cost of four GED Ready tests ($24 in total) as well, and that results in an overall price tag of $198!

Michigan HiSET price

The Michigan HiSET exam will set you back $118.75 for the entire exam if you take the exam on a computer and $133 for all subjects if you sit for the paper-based exam at one of Michigan's test facilities. It goes without saying that if you take the HiSET exam online, you'll have to do so on a computer.

GED scoring

The four GED modules are scored on a 100-200 scale. Below passing is 100-144; high school equivalency is 145-164; college-ready is 165-174; college-ready plus college credit is 175-200.

HiSET scoring

The HiSET is scored on a scale from 1 to 20 and the minimally required score on each of the five subject tests is 8. Your overall score must be at least 45 while your essay score must be 2 or more (out of 6).

What's on the GED test?

There are four independent sub-exams on the GED test that cover these academic fields: Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, Reasoning through Language Arts, and Science. The subtests are timed as follows: Math: 135 minutes; Social Studies: 70 minutes; Language Arts: 155 minutes (including a short break); Science: 90 minutes.

The HiSET exam comes with individual Language Arts Reading and Language Arts Writing sub-exams which brings the total number of HiSET subtests to five that can also be taken separately.
